Checklist for preparing to head to the slopes

Picture
Ever wonder if you're forgetting something you will really need out on the slopes? Use the simple checklist below so you don't forget any essentials.

  • Skis or snowboard, boots, poles
  • Helmet
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Ski jacket
  • Snow pants
  • Knee braces or special items (is there anything else you really need)
  • Gatorade (or any other sports drink that contains electrolytes)
  • Sunscreen if skiing in mountains or during daylight hours
  • Food and extra water
Optional additions for your ski bag
  • Neck gator (essential item if weather is very cold)
  • Extra pair of ski socks (especially on warm or wet days)
  • Extra pair of gloves
  • Snacks (healthy foods for meals and candy bars for quick snacks). Avoid nutritional/energy bars unless if you plan on eating them only before or after skiing. Your body will not be able to absorb the nutrients when you're exercising; so it’s better to just eat a candy bar.
Clothing to wear on the slopes
  • Base layers: should be non-cotton, thin layers for both top and bottom base layers
  • Mid layers: Top: add any kind of a second thin layer if it will be very cold; then add a sweater or fleece. Bottom: wear fleece pants or sweatpants over stretch pants. Never wear jeans.
  • Outer layers: waterproof ski jacket (try to find one that is also windproof) and snow pants
  • Only wear one pair of ski socks (non-cotton). Or, if it will be a very cold day then add a polypropylene sock underneath regular ski socks. These are very thin socks with wicking abilities that lock in more warmth. If you have new ski boots that have not been fully broken into yet, then do not wear two pairs of socks (it will only cut off circulation further and make your feet cold faster).
Have fun on the slopes!
